In a special report for BBC Three, journalist Layla Wright investigates a rising trend among young women in America who are embracing extreme right-wing ideologies and espousing these views through inflammatory and often offensive language on social media. The episode airs on Monday, 2 September 2024, at 9:00 PM.
Layla, originally from Liverpool, travels to the United States to meet and understand the women at the forefront of this new political movement. She immerses herself in a growing online community of influencers, podcasters, and creators who identify as conservative and often criticise progressive politics.
In Nashville, Tennessee, Layla meets 16-year-old Hannah, a rising star in right-wing circles. Homeschooled and raised in a traditional patriarchal family led by her former pastor father, Hannah has been brought up with the expectation that her primary roles are to be a wife and mother. Despite her young age, Hannah is ambitious and determined to make her mark within this political sphere.
The episode also features 24-year-old Morgonn from Arizona, who has gained prominence as a conservative influencer. Morgonn has built an online presence by regularly posting content that is critical of feminism and the LGBTQ+ community, reflecting a perspective that is at odds with mainstream feminist discourse.
Layla also travels to the US-Mexico border to meet Christie, a woman on a mission. Christie regularly journeys to the border to confront migrants crossing illegally and live-streams her experiences to her online followers, sharing her perspective on immigration and national security.
Through her interactions with these women, Layla attempts to understand the motivations behind their adoption of such extreme ideologies. She explores how these women are utilising their online platforms to promote views that seek to roll back the progress made by feminist movements and challenge accepted societal norms.
