Wildlife biologist Liz Bonnin presents Animal Genius, a documentary series exploring animal survival strategies worldwide. In the first episode, Bonnin investigates the remarkable teamwork of meerkats in Africa’s Kalahari Desert and sea turtles on Mexico’s beaches.
The series follows Bonnin as she collaborates with prominent experts worldwide to uncover the latest scientific insights into animal behavior and survival strategies.
In the debut episode, titled “Teamwork,” Bonnin focuses on two fascinating examples of animal collaboration. She begins her journey in Africa’s Kalahari Desert, where she joins researchers studying the complex communication system of meerkats. These small mammals exhibit a unique language, using various vocalizations and tail signals to coordinate their group activities and warn of potential dangers. By understanding their language, scientists gain insight into the social dynamics and organization of meerkat societies.
Bonnin then travels to the beaches of Mexico, where she witnesses the remarkable synchronization of baby sea turtles during hatching season. Each year, thousands of sea turtles emerge from their nests simultaneously, scrambling towards the ocean in a survival strategy that increases their chances of evading predators.
Animal Genius: Teamwork airs on National Geographic on Sunday, September 8, 2024.
