Ever wonder what it’s like to be a meerkat, standing tall on those spindly legs, surveying the African savanna? National Geographic Wild’s “Animals, They’re Just Like Us!” returns this Friday with a look at these charismatic critters and their surprisingly human-like behavior. “Meerkat Survival School” takes us into the heart of their desert domain, observing the ingenious ways they learn to survive in a harsh environment.
From desert dining lessons to, believe it or not, “flirting” with lions (one assumes from a respectful distance), the episode reveals a side of meerkats that goes beyond cute meerkat antics. How do they acquire these essential life skills? The show uses the familiar framework of “school” to present the meerkats’ learning process in a humorous and relatable way.
But the meerkats aren’t the only stars of the show. “Meerkat Survival School” also checks in with an “elephant babysitter’s club.” The show’s creators, globetrotters in their own right, have visited all seven continents in their search for human parallels in the animal kingdom. They’ve covered penguins, giraffes, and chimps; now it’s the meerkats’ turn in the spotlight.
