In an upcoming episode of Australian Story, airing on Monday 11 March 2024 at 8.00pm on ABC TV, viewers will be introduced to climate change activist Anjali Sharma. This young woman has been making waves in the fight against climate change and is often compared to renowned activist Greta Thunberg.
At just 14 years old, Anjali organized school strikes to raise awareness about the pressing issue of climate change. By the time she turned 16, she took legal action against the government in her pursuit of a sustainable future. Now, at the age of 19, Anjali continues her advocacy from her university dorm room.
Teaming up with independent Senator David Pocock, Anjali aims to pass laws that would require politicians to prioritize their duty of care to future generations when considering fossil fuel projects. Although their bill is currently being reviewed by a Senate committee, Anjali and a group of passionate young activists are actively engaging with parliamentarians from all sides of the political spectrum.
Anjali acknowledges that this campaign presents challenges for someone who has never before participated in legislative drafting or run a grassroots movement from a university dorm. However, her dedication stems from witnessing the devastating impact of heatwaves and floods on her family members in India.
Engaging in climate politics can be emotionally taxing even for seasoned activists. Despite facing online abuse and racism, Anjali remains steadfast in her determination to drive radical change.
Tune into Australian Story on Monday 11 March 2024 at 8.00pm on ABC TV to learn more about Anjali Sharma’s inspiring journey and commitment to fighting for a sustainable future.
