The “Antiques Roadshow” returns to Firstsite in Colchester for its third and final visit, and as usual, the attic detritus doesn’t disappoint. From a creepy goblin figurine to signed Tolkien first editions, the range of items is impressively eclectic.
Expert Clive Farahar unearths a literary goldmine: a collection of Tolkien books inscribed to a man whose family lived near the author. It’s the kind of discovery that makes bookworms swoon and sparks dreams of hidden literary treasures in our own dusty shelves.
Meanwhile, Mark Hill tackles a family feud over a bronze figurine. Is it a genuine antique or a clever reproduction? The tension is palpable, the stakes surprisingly high. Elsewhere, Claire Tole-Moir examines a guitar that supposedly shaped the sound of British rock, while Ronnie Archer Morgan appraises a Congolese shield used to settle a debt – a transaction considerably more interesting than your average credit card swipe.
Other finds include a 17th-century amulet, a porcelain plaque unearthed from a box bought at auction, and YMCA memorabilia highlighting the often-overlooked contributions of women during World War I. Fiona Bruce and Lee Young even explore modern ceramic repair techniques, proving that even broken treasures can have a second life.
“Antiques Roadshow” airs Sunday, January 5, 2025, at 7:00 PM on BBC One.
