Netflix is adapting Bella Mackie’s novel How to Kill Your Family, with Anya Taylor-Joy set to star. The series will be written and executive-produced by Extraordinary creator Emma Moran.
Based on Mackie’s Sunday Times best-selling book of the same name, the show follows Grace Bernard, played by Taylor-Joy, the forgotten child of billionaire Simon Artemis. Grace embarks on a revenge mission, killing members of her family, but ends up in prison for a murder she may not have committed.
“I often think [Taylor-Joy] understands [Grace] better than I do,” said Mackie.
“As soon as I turned the last page, I knew I had to be a part of bringing this story to life,” said Taylor-Joy. “I am looking forward to getting our hands even dirtier.”
Moran described Grace as “the kind of complicated, dark, but utterly hilarious antihero you dream of writing”. She added: “Striking that balance between camp fun and brutal violence that Bella hits so perfectly in the book is a challenge I’m so looking forward to.”
Taylor-Joy’s character is driven by a desire for revenge after her father claims to have no memory of an affair with her mother. Feeling rejected by her family, Grace’s anger turns to murder as she stands to inherit a substantial fortune.
