Apple TV+ has revealed that “Sunny,” a mystery thriller starring Rashida Jones, will debut on July 10, 2024, with the first two episodes. This marks the beginning of a 10-episode series, with new episodes airing weekly until September 4.
The series is created by Katie Robbins, who also serves as showrunner, and directed by Lucy Tcherniak. Jones, who also serves as an executive producer, leads the cast alongside Hidetoshi Nishijima, Joanna Sotomura, Judy Ongg, You, annie the clumsy, and Jun Kunimura.
“Sunny” revolves around the character of Suzie, an American expatriate living in Kyoto, Japan, played by Jones. The narrative takes a dramatic turn when Suzie’s husband and son vanish in a mysterious plane crash. In the aftermath of this tragedy, Suzie is presented with a peculiar ‘consolation’ gift: a robot named Sunny, manufactured by her husband’s electronics company. Initially, Suzie is resistant to the robot’s attempts to fill the void in her life. However, as the story progresses, an unexpected friendship forms between Suzie and Sunny. Together, they embark on a truth-seeking journey, uncovering the dark secrets behind her family’s disappearance, which propels them into a world of unknown dangers.
The series is based on the book “The Dark Manual” (also known as “Dark Manual”) by Japan-based award-winning Irish writer Colin O’Sullivan. “Sunny” marks the second collaboration between Apple, A24, and Jones, following the acclaimed film “On the Rocks” by Sofia Coppola. Jones also recently starred in Apple’s hit series “Silo”, based on Hugh Howey’s bestselling trilogy of dystopian novels.
