On Monday, 15 April, Australian Story on ABC will feature an eccentric flower farmer from Monbulk, Victoria, who became a global sensation last year. Arnold Dix, known as the “worst farmer in Monbulk,” is also a barrister, scientist, engineer, and tunnelling expert.
In November 2023, Dix gained international recognition when he helped rescue 41 Indian workers trapped underground in a tunnel collapse. His expertise in tunnelling was crucial in this dangerous mission, and his efforts did not go unnoticed by the people of India.
The episode will explore Dix’s unusual and varied career path, from his work as a barrister and scientist to his expertise in tunnelling, which led him to that remote location in the Indian Himalayas.
Dix will share his firsthand account of the rescue operation, explaining how he “listened to the rock” to navigate the difficult terrain and ensure the safe rescue of the trapped workers. The pressure was immense as the whole of India followed the unfolding drama.
The story will also include interviews with Dix’s family and friends, as well as Indian officials who witnessed his heroic efforts.
Australian Story airs on ABC at 8:00 pm on Monday 15 April 15, 2024.
