HBO Max and Magnolia Network will premiere the eight-part docuseries Back to the Frontier on Thursday, July 10. The series follows three American families as they step away from modern life and attempt to live under 1880s conditions for eight weeks.
Produced by Chip and Joanna Gaines, the series features the Lopers from Alabama, the Hanna-Riggs from Texas, and the Halls from Florida. Each family must build shelter, manage food supplies, raise livestock, and adapt to life without electricity or modern tools.
The format blends period reconstruction with observational storytelling, with the series focusing on the daily demands of off-grid living and the impact on family dynamics over time. It marks one of Magnolia’s highest-profile unscripted launches of the year, with HBO Max also carrying the title as part of their ongoing content partnership.
To support the release, Warner Bros. Discovery will stage a two-city promotional pop-up branded “The Frontier Wagon.” The event will appear in New York’s Chelsea Triangle on Saturday, June 28, and in Los Angeles at The Original Farmers Market on Saturday, July 12. Guests will be offered themed refreshments and custom Western hats. Entry is free.
