In Tuesday nights Back Roads, presenter Lisa Millar explores the Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail Trail in Queensland’s South Burnett region. This former rail line, which serviced communities for over a century, has been transformed into a vibrant corridor attracting cyclists, tourists, and runners, bringing new life and prosperity to the area.
Lisa Millar embarks on a journey down memory lane as she visits the town she grew up in and uncovers signs of revival. She finds that her old school has more students, and new businesses are sprouting up. This rejuvenation is not limited to her hometown; other towns along the old rail corridor are experiencing a similar boost. It’s as if the historic train line, once a catalyst for regional prosperity, has been reborn as a lifeline, drawing visitors, tourists, and outdoor enthusiasts to the district.
Among those drawn to the area are Dave Earle and his wife, Tania. They established a saddlery in Wondai two years ago, leaving behind their high-paying jobs. Dave, a former mining driller, now finds fulfillment in working with leather, conducting workshops, and crafting saddles. Their decision to pursue a new life has paid off, as they’ve found a sense of community and life satisfaction they hadn’t known before.
Lisa also participates in the Wondai Park Run, a free international event held every Saturday on the rail trail. As an ambassador for Park Run in Australia, Lisa sees how the event unites the community through laughter, exercise, and social interaction. She meets the organizers, Ros Heit and Claire Kapernick, who attribute the success of the event to the safe and sealed course provided by the Rail Trail.
Back Roads: Rail Trail, QLD airs on ABC Australia on Tuesday, 1 October 2024, at 8.00 pm.
