Back Roads: Tarkine, TAS with Marta Dusseldorp (ABC Australia, 27 August 2024)

Back Roads

Back Roads returns with a journey through the Tarkine region in Tasmania, guided by one of Australia’s celebrated actresses, Marta Dusseldorp. Well-known for her roles in popular dramas such as Jack Irish, Janet King, and Bay of Fires, Marta joins Heather Ewart on a path of discovery through ancient rainforests, vast plains, and stunning coastlines.

In this Tarkine expedition, Marta Dusseldorp, an esteemed actress, joins Heather Ewart to explore a region that is a treasure chest of natural wonders. They venture into ancient rainforests, roam across button grass plains, and traverse swathes of farmland, all while taking in the wild west coast. Dusseldorp is wowed by the deep rainforest, dating back 65 million years when Australia was part of Gondwanaland. She explores this pristine environment with Rob Saltmarsh, a Tarkine guide for nearly three decades.

The strong circumpolar winds, known as the Roaring Forties, bring rain and contribute to the thriving rainforest. These winds create a breathtaking experience at Preminghana, an area belonging to the Tasmanian Aboriginal community that offers stunning 360-degree views of the Tarkine. Dusseldorp also hitches a ride with local postie Jocelyn Flint, a former cowgirl, who shares entertaining tales of the region’s farming community.

The journey continues south to the town of Waratah, where an incredible natural wonder awaits, followed by a cruise down the Pieman River on one of the world’s oldest Huon Pine riverboats.
