“Bad Monkey” Swings Back for Season 2 at Apple TV+, Relocates Production to Los Angeles

Bad Monkey Key Art

Apple TV+ has greenlit a second season of its darkly comedic thriller “Bad Monkey,” starring Vince Vaughn as the down-on-his-luck former detective, Andrew Yancy. The series, which wrapped its first season earlier this year, will shift its primary production base from the Florida Keys to Los Angeles for the upcoming season.

The first season of “Bad Monkey,” adapted from Carl Hiaasen’s novel of the same name, followed Yancy’s tumultuous journey after discovering a severed arm while fishing. The discovery plunged him into a world of corruption, conspiracy, and eccentric characters inhabiting the vibrant, yet treacherous landscape of South Florida. While Season 1 saw the resolution of many storylines, the door remains open for the return of some familiar faces alongside Vaughn in Season 2.

Season 2 will chart a new course, featuring an original storyline inspired by Hiaasen’s distinct style but not directly adapting his sequel, “Razor Girl” as initially intended. Adam Sztykiel, known for his work on “Rampage” and “Scoob!”, will take the helm as head writer, collaborating with returning showrunner Bill Lawrence. Lawrence’s involvement with multiple series necessitates this collaborative approach.

The decision to relocate production stems from a combination of factors, including accommodating Vaughn’s Los Angeles residency and mitigating weather-related production delays experienced during filming in Florida. While the new season will be primarily based in Los Angeles, certain segments will still be filmed in Florida to maintain the show’s unique tropical ambiance.

The first season boasted a diverse ensemble cast, including L. Scott Caldwell, Rob Delaney, Meredith Hagner, Natalie Martinez, Alex Moffat, Michelle Monaghan, Ronald Peet, Jodie Turner-Smith, John Ortiz, Zach Braff, Ashley Nicole Black, Scott Glenn, and Charlotte Lawrence. Casting details for Season 2 have yet to be announced.
