Well, the Garvey sisters are at it again, and if you thought things were complicated before, “Boom” cranks the dial to eleven. This fifth installment of Bad Sisters season two sees our intrepid siblings stumbling forward with their ill-conceived scheme, dragging poor, unsuspecting Angelica along with them like a forgotten shopping cart.
This time, it’s Eva (Sharon Horgan) who takes center stage, fueled by a potent cocktail of grief, guilt, and possibly one too many pints down at the local. Her laser focus on revenge has shifted targets. The John Paul problem may be resolved (permanently), but now she’s got a Garvey-shaped bullseye painted on her back. It’s a mess, folks, a glorious, Irish-accented mess.
The rest of the Garvey clan – Bibi (Sarah Greene), Ursula (Eva Birthistle), Becka (Eve Hewson), and Grace (Anne-Marie Duff) – seem to be spending most of their time trying to keep Eva from imploding (or exploding, depending on the day’s Guinness intake). Claes Bang’s portrayal of the smarmy JP may be gone, but the ripple effects of his awfulness continue to rock the Garvey boat.
The writing on the series remains as sharp as ever, managing to balance the dark humor with some genuinely poignant moments, particularly between the sisters. The performances, too, are consistently strong. Duff, as the perpetually anxious Grace, continues to break our hearts, while Bang’s absence is, shall we say, not keenly felt.
Bad Sisters airs Wednesdays on Apple TV+.
