Prime Video has set a July 9 premiere for Ballard, the latest expansion of its Bosch franchise, with all 10 episodes set to land in a single drop. Maggie Q headlines the new entry as LAPD detective Renée Ballard, stepping into a lead role that pushes the Connellyverse deeper into serialized procedural territory.
Based on Michael Connelly’s bestselling Ballard novels, the series tracks Ballard’s work as head of the LAPD’s newly formed cold case unit—a job that pulls her into long-buried homicides, a suspected serial killer, and corruption that cuts into the department’s core. She’ll be joined by Titus Welliver’s Harry Bosch, back in the fold as a consultant and occasional field partner, building on Prime Video’s push to keep Bosch fans engaged as the franchise recalibrates.
Maggie Q leads a cast that also includes Courtney Taylor, John Carroll Lynch, and Michael Mosley. Behind the scenes, the series is produced by Fabel Entertainment, with Henrik Bastin, Michael Alaimo, and Kendall Sherwood executive producing alongside Connelly. Jasmine Russ serves as co-EP.
Ballard continues Prime Video’s slow-burn strategy to build a long-haul crime drama ecosystem around Connelly’s IP, anchoring its procedural slate while broadening the audience base with a new lead. The project marks a tonal shift—Renée is more emotionally attuned than Bosch, but no less relentless—which allows the series to revisit familiar beats without retreading the same ground.
Alaimo and Sherwood serve as co-showrunners, aiming to thread a tighter character study into the framework of a legacy procedural. The move reflects Prime Video’s intent to scale its franchise slate with recognizable IP that can support multiple narrative strands, while still delivering binge-worthy drop-style scheduling.
Maggie Q’s casting brings fresh heat to the brand, giving Prime Video a sharper hook as streamers double down on book-to-screen crime sagas.
