BBC Announce True Crime Drama The Gold To Get Second Series

Popular BBC true crime drama The Gold will be back for another season on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Based on the real-life events surrounding the 1983 Brink’s-Mat heist and the chase that followed, the factual drama has received rave reviews.

The Gold debuted earlier this year on BBC One and BBC iPlayer to an audience of 8.7 million people, making it one of the most watched new dramas of the year in the UK.

Hugh Bonneville (Brian Boyce), Nicki Jennings (Charlotte Spencer), Tony Brightwell (Emun Elliott), Tom Cullen (John Palmer), Marilyn Palmer (Stefanie Martini), and Charlie Miller (Sam Spruell) are all returning for the second series of The Gold.

The police (Hugh Bonneville, Charlotte Spencer, and Emun Elliot) learned after convicting some of the Brink’s-Mat gold’s handlers that the thieves had only ever had half of the gold. The second season delves into the fate of the other half and the illicit wealth it generated. Police embark on dramatic manhunts as they desperately attempt to solve the longest and most expensive investigation in Metropolitan Police history as the investigation becomes a high-stakes, nerve-wracking journey into international money laundering and organised crime.

Executive Producer and writer Neil Forsyth remarked: “I am delighted that we have been given the opportunity to tell the rest of the Brink’s-Mat story, which sees the consequences of the robbery and its aftermath grow only more surprising, dramatic and far-reaching, both in Britain and around the world.”

Produced by Tannadice Pictures, a joint venture between Neil Forsyth and Objective Fiction, a division of Objective Media Group, an All3Media Company, the second series of The Gold (6×60′) was commissioned by Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama. All3Media International is involved in its production. Patrick Harkins (Tin Star, Guilt), Neil Forsyth (Guilt, Eric, Ernie & Me), and Charlie Leech (Bounty Hunters, Lovesick) are the directing and producing teams. Tannadice Pictures’ Neil Forsyth and Ben Farrell and the BBC’s Nick Lambon serve as executive producers.

The second season of The Gold will begin filming in January, and more details, including casting announcements, will be made public as they become available. Distribution is handled by All3Media International. Series one of The Gold can be viewed on BBC iPlayer.
