BBC Drama Dope Girls Casting Announced

The BBC has commissioned Bad Wolf and Sony Pictures Television to create a six-part drama series titled Dope Girls, and filming has already started. The story follows a group of female gangs in Soho, London, after World War One who deal in drugs, moonshine, and clubs. Polly Stenham and Alex Warren wrote and produced the series. The show will be available on BBC iPlayer and BBC One.

The cast includes Julianne Nicholson as Kate Galloway, a single mother who establishes a nightclub to provide for her daughter. Eliza Scanlen plays Violet Davies, a female police officer assigned to go undercover in the underground Soho nightclubs. Umi Myers portrays Billie Cassidy, a bohemian dancer whose life is changed by Kate’s arrival. Geraldine James stars as Isabella, the leader of a criminal family.

The series also features Michael Duke, Ian Bonar, Laura Checkley, Will Keen, Fiona Button, Harry Cadby, Nabhaan Rizwan, Priya Kansara, and Jordan Kouamé in supporting roles.

Dope Girls is described as a thrilling drama with a unique female perspective on organized crime in the early 20th century. The series is being produced by Bad Wolf, with Polly Stenham and Alex Warren serving as executive producers alongside Kate Crowther, Jane Tranter, Michael Lesslie, and Rebecca Ferguson.

The lead director is Shannon Murphy, with Miranda Bowen directing later episodes. The series will be distributed internationally by Sony Pictures Television. Filming is currently underway, and a release date has not yet been announced.
