The BBC Proms continues with an evening of enchanting music and Shakespearean drama. The concert, conducted by Gemma New, features the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the National Youth Choir of Scotland’s Chamber Choir.
The programme includes a musical portrayal of the biblical figure Salomé by Mel Bonis, a romantic composer who has been overlooked until recently. Bonis’s work, full of sensual and mysterious sounds, opens the concert. This is followed by Mozart’s famous and much-loved Clarinet Concerto, performed by American clarinettist Anthony McGill.
The evening culminates in a modern semi-staged production of Shakespeare’s beloved comedy, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, with actors presenting readings from the play. This is accompanied by Mendelssohn’s magical musical retelling, bringing the story to life on the Royal Albert Hall stage.
BBC Proms: Mozart, Mendelssohn and A Midsummer Night’s Dream airs on BBC Four on Friday 23 August 2024 at 8:00 pm.
