Food Network’s Beat Bobby Flay isn’t exactly known for subtlety. It’s a culinary cage match, and Flay, for all his affable charm, is there to win. But this week’s episode, “Attention!,” dials up the intensity with a military theme, bringing in chefs Star Maye and Marie Yniguez, both with service backgrounds. And as if Flay needed any more pressure, Sunny Anderson and ESPN’s Sage Steele – also boasting military connections – are on hand to, well, presumably make things even more difficult for the celebrity chef.
The basic premise remains: two guest chefs go head-to-head, vying for the chance to take on Flay. It’s a tried-and-true formula, one that hinges on the inherent drama of watching talented cooks battle it out under pressure. The addition of Anderson and Steele, however, suggests a strategic element beyond the usual trash-talking. Are they mentors? Saboteurs? Or just there to wave tiny American flags? The press release mentions Flay being put “through a set of drills.”
This is culinary competition as spectator sport, and the military angle, while perhaps a touch on-the-nose, adds a layer of… well, not gravitas, exactly. Let’s call it “structured intensity.” It will be interesting to check out the episode.
