The acclaimed Belfast-based police drama Blue Lights is returning for a third season, BritBox has announced, with filming currently underway. The series, known for its realistic portrayal of policing in Northern Ireland, is adding Cathy Tyson (Boiling Point) and Michael Smiley (Bad Sisters) to its already impressive cast.
Returning favorites include Siân Brooke, Martin McCann, Katherine Devlin, Nathan Braniff, Joanne Crawford, Andi Osho, Frank Blake, Abigail McGibbon, Dearbháile McKinney, and Andrea Irvine. The show, a hit with both critics and audiences, has garnered multiple awards.
Season 3 picks up two years after the previous season. Officers Grace (Brooke), Annie (Devlin), and Tommy (Braniff) are no longer rookies. However, their experience will be tested as they confront a dangerous new threat. The upcoming season, “finds that after two years into their jobs as response officers, Grace, Annie and Tommy are accustomed to life under the blue lights” but the work they do “will take them into a sinister world hidden behind the veneer of middle-class life.”
The established criminal landscape of Belfast has shifted. A new, global gang has taken control, creating a more perilous environment for the officers. The series creators promise a season that exposes the hidden world of those who enable organized crime, moving from the usual street-level focus.
Blue Lights is a co-production of Two Cities Television and Gallagher Films. The series was co-created by Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, who also serve as writers and executive producers. Stephen Wright of Two Cities Television and Louise Gallagher of Gallagher Films are co-creators and producers, said of the new season that “a new global gang rules Belfast”, and brings danger closer to the officers’ homes, “than ever before”.
Amanda Black produces Season 3, with the first three episodes directed by Jack Casey and the final three by actor/director Angela Griffin.
Blue Lights Season 3 will premiere on BritBox in the United States. Seasons 1 and 2 are currently available for streaming. BBC Studios handles international distribution.
