The CBS daytime drama Beyond the Gates is shaking things up with a casting change. Keith D. Robinson is stepping into the role of Dr. Ted Richardson, taking over from Maurice Johnson. Viewers can see Robinson’s first appearance in May.
Here’s the Lowdown: Robinson will play the accomplished plastic surgeon Dr. Ted Richardson, who is married to Dr. Nicole Richardson (Daphnee Duplaix). Character recasts happen frequently in the soap opera world.
What This Means Now: Beyond the Gates, which takes place in a luxurious, predominantly Black, gated community near Washington D.C., consistently delivers dramatic twists. BTG has only been on the air for a weeks so this is a signigicant and early change, we haven’t been given a reason yet for the recasting.
The Bigger Picture: This soap opera is breaking ground. It’s a joint venture between CBS Studios and the NAACP, in collaboration with P&G Studios, and stands out as the first hour-long Black daytime soap opera, as well as the first new daytime drama since Passions debuted over two decades ago. The show has a strong cast that will now feature the talents of Robinson, who is known for appearances on ABC’s A Million Little Things as well the movies Dreamgirls and All Eyes on Me. Early ratings suggest the show is resonating with viewers.
