Eleven kids. In New York City. That’s the premise of TLC’s new series, Big Family, Big City, and frankly, I’m already exhausted just thinking about it. Marc and Amber de la Motte traded the sprawling suburbs of San Diego for the concrete jungle of Harlem, and let’s just say, their rose-colored glasses seem to be losing their tint.
Raising a large family anywhere is tough. Raising 11 kids in a city known for its tiny apartments and astronomical cost of living? That’s a whole other level of complicated. The show focuses on the financial strain, which is no surprise. I mean how many hot dogs are these people going to eat? Feeding and housing 13 people anywhere is an expensive endeavor.
The fish-out-of-water element is obvious. They traded suburban tranquility for the non-stop hustle of NYC. Will their laid-back SoCal attitudes survive the city that never sleeps? More importantly, will their bank account survive?
Big Family, Big City airs Tuesday at 10/9c on TLC.
