It’s a significant shift behind the scenes at the ABC, as long-time “7.30” Political Editor Laura Tingle is set to step into a new role: the ABC’s Global Affairs Editor. This move sees one of Australia’s most recognised political journalists turn her focus from the corridors of power in Canberra to the wider world stage.

In her new position, Tingle will lend her four decades of reporting experience to breaking down and analysing major international events. Her insights will span across all ABC platforms, meaning you’ll likely see and hear her contributions on TV, radio, and online as she tackles major world news.

Tingle brings a serious resume to the job, having worked at major newspapers like The Australian Financial Review, The Australian, The Age, and The Sydney Morning Herald before her time at “7.30.” She’s also been recognised for her work with two Walkley Awards. This depth of experience in making sense of complex issues should serve her well as she grapples with global affairs.

Taking on the Global Affairs Editor spot means Tingle will be working closely with the ABC’s team of foreign correspondents located in 11 spots around the world, as well as reporters in the Asia Pacific Newsroom and the Pacific Local Journalism Network. It’s a key job within the ABC’s international reporting efforts. With Tingle leaving “7.30” around the middle of the year, ABC NEWS will begin the search for a new Political Editor to fill her spot on the flagship current affairs program. ABC Director of News Justin Stevens spoke highly of Tingle, calling her an “exceptional journalist” well-equipped to help audiences understand current events.
