The three-part documentary series Black Widow, premiering on Sky Documentaries and the streaming service NOW on 15 September, looks into the shocking story of Dena Thompson, who went by the alias “The Black Widow.” Over two decades, Dena orchestrated a campaign of fraud, deception, bigamy, and murder, leaving a trail of devastated lives in her wake.
Through first-hand accounts from those she manipulated and exploited, including her first husband, who ended up homeless, the series uncovers the intricate web of lies and manipulation that Dena spun to coerce her victims. Using Lonely Hearts columns, she lured unsuspecting men into her life, convincing them to give up their life savings, homes, and even their freedom based on her bizarre but convincing stories.
The series explores how Dena was able to evade capture for so long and the impact her actions have had on the lives of her victims, even years after her conviction.
