Channel 4 has released first-look images for Brian and Margaret, a two-part drama set to air next year. The series is written by RTS award-winning James Graham and is based on Rob Burley’s book, Why is This Lying Bastard Lying to Me?: Searching for the Truth on Political TV.
The drama focuses on the iconic 1989 interview between journalist Brian Walden and former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, which became one of the most talked-about political exchanges in British history.
Academy Award nominee Steve Coogan stars as Brian Walden, with Harriet Walter playing Margaret Thatcher. The drama covers their final interview, which stirred national debate and eventually contributed to Thatcher’s resignation. The interview was a critical turning point in UK politics, symbolizing the tension between the media and political leadership.
The 2×60-minute drama is produced by Baby Cow Productions, a BBC Studios-owned production company. It has been commissioned by Channel 4’s Ollie Madden and Ben Wadey, with Stephen Frears directing.
The executive producers include Sarah Monteith, Delyth Scudamore, and Rupert Majendie, while Dan Winch serves as the producer. BBC Studios is handling international distribution.
