This documentary investigates the shocking legacy of Britain’s nuclear weapons testing program and its impact on the lives of thousands of military personnel involved in the 1950s and 1960s. The film reveals the stories of veterans who, decades later, continue to suffer from serious health issues and believe their exposure to nuclear tests was the cause.
During this time, over 22,000 British military personnel, including teenage conscripts, were stationed in the South Pacific for nuclear weapons tests. These men were instructed to stand with a clear view of ground zero, turning away and covering their eyes at the moment of detonation. Veterans recall seeing the bones in their hands and the spine of the person in front of them due to the intense radiation.
The health consequences were far-reaching, with veterans experiencing a range of cancers, cardiovascular disease, and auto-immune conditions. Additionally, a significant number of their descendants have suffered from birth defects. Despite the apparent connection, the veterans have faced a decades-long struggle to access their medical records from their time at the nuclear test sites, and the UK remains the only country, other than North Korea, that has not provided compensation to its nuclear test veterans.
The film looks at the ongoing fight for justice by these veterans, which has gained new momentum following pledges from the recently elected Labour government.
