BritBox’s December offerings look to cater to Anglophiles with a penchant for crime dramas, mysteries, and a dash of holiday spirit. Leading the charge is Sophie Turner in Joan, a new series tracking the exploits of Britain’s infamous jewel thief, Joan Hannington. Premiering December 5, 2024, Joan will bring a dose of edgy glamour to the streaming service.

But Turner isn’t the only woman taking charge this December. BritBox is highlighting female-led crime dramas, dubbing it their “women in crime” theme. Ashley Jensen returns as DI Calder in Shetland Season 9, premiering December 11, 2024, investigating the puzzling disappearance of a friend.

Siobhan Finneran takes on the legal thriller Protection (premiering December 29, 2024), while Jenna Coleman leads the psychological drama The Jetty, arriving December 13, 2024. It appears BritBox is aiming for a corner of the streaming market hungry for complex female characters and twisty plots.

For those seeking holiday comfort, BritBox offers a stocking full of Christmas specials. Sister Boniface Mysteries, Beyond Paradise, and the entirety of Peep Show land on the platform, providing viewing options ranging from cozy whodunits to darkly comedic awkwardness. A Death in Paradise Christmas Special will also arrive this month, shaking things up with a new detective inspector set to clash with the Saint Marie team.

Beyond the holiday fare and the “women in crime” focus, BritBox has a few other noteworthy additions. Paddington (the 2014 film) arrives December 1, 2024, with some family-friendly entertainment. True crime enthusiasts can explore the chilling Valentine’s Day murder documented in Black Widow: The Murder of David Jackson, premiering December 20, 2024. Rounding out the month are the four-part drama Deceit (December 27, 2024), the Carols from King’s Christmas Special 2024 (December 26, 2024), and the Gardeners’ World Winter Special 2024 (December 31, 2024).
