Food, family, and forensics intertwine in BritBox’s newly announced original series, A Taste for Murder. Produced by Eagle Eye Drama, the team behind Hotel Portofino, this six-episode crime procedural transports viewers to the sun-drenched, yet mysterious, island of Capri, Italy.
Each episode uses classic Italian cuisine as a key element in solving a central murder mystery. Far from being a mere backdrop, the food itself is integral to the story. “Cooking and food will play an important role in the show,” said Eagle Eye Chief Creative Officer Jo McGrath, “reflecting the emotional dilemmas faced by our core characters.”
The series follows DCI Joe Mottram (Warren Brown), a Metropolitan Police detective who, following a personal tragedy, relocates to Capri with his daughter, Angelica (Beau Gadsdon). While struggling with his own grief and his daughter’s, he becomes involved with local investigations.
The family dynamic is crucial. Brown’s character is staying with his Italian in-laws, headed by the matriarch Elena Da Vinale, portrayed by BAFTA winner Phyllis Logan. McGrath describes the show as “an escapist detective series weaving intriguing crime cases with compelling family drama.”
Joining the cast are Cristiana Dell’Anna as Inspector Lara Sarrancino, Urbano Barberini as Gennaro Da Vinale, Alessandro Fella as Luca Da Vinale, Gaia Scodellaro as Daria, and Alessandro Bedetti as Daniele. The series creator, Matt Baker, hints at the duality of the show. “A Taste for Murder is as much a family drama as it is detective fiction,” he shared.
Series creator Matt Baker describes his series as one that will explore “the difficulties of maintaining loving relationships when coping with trauma.” The idyllic location of the series, added Baker, plays a part in its crimes. “Outlandish murders that are very much the product of the beautiful Meditteranean island.”
Filming for A Taste for Murder, which is set to air on BritBox in the U.S. and Canada, starts in Croatia before moving to Italy.
