Britten’s Curlew River Flows onto BBC Four

BBC Four Logo

Benjamin Britten’s chamber opera Curlew River, receives a fresh cinematic treatment just in time for its 60th anniversary. This new film version, airing on BBC Four this Sunday, November 17, at 7:45 PM, isn’t your typical “stand and deliver” opera experience. Instead, director Dominic Best, along with musical director Audrey Hyland and stage director Deborah Warner, have crafted something more visually evocative.

The film interweaves live performance footage with scenes shot in the Fenlands of East Anglia. This marshy, atmospheric landscape mirrors the setting of the opera itself, based on the 15th-century Japanese Noh play Sumigadawa (Sumida River). Britten, deeply affected by the Noh play during his travels in Japan, adapted it into a parable of grief, community, and faith, themes that continue to hold power today.
