From Jalopies to Jags: Built America Presents Chronicles the Rise of the Rental Car

Car Generic

Built America Presents shifts gears this week, trading skyscrapers and bridges for something a bit more… mobile. “Road to Riches” tells the story of the rental car, an invention that seems so commonplace now, it’s hard to imagine a time before its existence. We follow a struggling car salesman with the bright idea of letting people, you know, borrow his cars for a fee. Genius, right?

He teams up with John Hertz (yes, that Hertz), and together they set out to put America on wheels, one rental at a time. But as with any good capitalist tale, a rival emerges: WWII veteran Warren Avis. The ensuing competition between these automotive titans birthed a multi-billion dollar industry, proving that sometimes, the best way to get rich is to let other people drive your cars.
