BBC One is doubling down on the Call the Midwife festivities this year, gifting viewers a two-part Christmas special spread across Christmas Day and Boxing Day. While this extended holiday story sounds delightful, be warned: that Christmas Day cliffhanger might leave you pacing until Boxing Day!
It’s 1969 in Poplar, and Christmas cheer is in the air, from the twinkling lights of the funfair to the sounds of carol singers rehearsing. But amidst the festive preparations, the midwives of Nonnatus House face a new challenge: a wave of influenza, including the dreaded Hong Kong flu, is sweeping through the community, casting a shadow over the holiday season. As if that weren’t enough, an escaped prisoner is on the loose, sparking fear and a series of break-ins, adding extra anxiety to the Christmas season.
But even with a health crisis and a criminal at large, life in Poplar goes on. The Turner children are busy with the Blue Peter Christmas appeal, Trixie Franklin is heading home for a nostalgic holiday visit, and the ever-resourceful Violet Buckle has organized a mince pie competition (because, let’s face it, would it even be Christmas in Poplar without one?).
Meanwhile, Miss Higgins is enjoying the holidays with her grandson, Harry, but Reggie’s homecoming plans hit a few unexpected snags. It’s going to be a Christmas in Poplar to remember – for better or for worse.
The Call the Midwife Christmas special airs on BBC One on Christmas Day and Boxing Day at 8:00 PM.
