So, another Sunday night rolls around, and what’s on the telly? Another dose of heartwarming, occasionally heartbreaking drama from Poplar, naturally. This week’s Call the Midwife, set in September 1970, finds our dedicated nuns and nurses grappling with a particularly nasty health crisis while also facing their own personal dilemmas. Buckle up, because life and death in 1970s East London rarely takes a break.

First up, it’s another day, another medical challenge for Nurse Joyce. She’s dealing with a mother experiencing serious postnatal complications, a scenario that’s all too familiar in this era of limited medical advancements. It’s the kind of storyline that Call the Midwife handles with both sensitivity and unflinching realism. Let’s just hope for a positive outcome, though with this show, you never really know.

Adding fuel to the fire is a timely council strike. As if attending to births and assorted ailments weren’t enough, now our midwives must contend with the fallout from uncollected rubbish. The result? A completely avoidable outbreak of Weil’s disease ripping through the community. This adds a grim backdrop to the usual medical drama, forcing our characters to tackle larger social issues alongside their regular duties.

And because personal lives never stay quiet in Poplar, Cyril finds his world turned upside down by a series of unexpected events. Details are scant at this point, but given Call the Midwife’s track record, it’s safe to assume tissues might be required.

Ultimately, this episode aims to deliver the usual blend of medical drama and personal stories that Call the Midwife fans have come to expect.

Call the Midwife airs Sunday 9 February 2025 at 8:05 PM on BBC One.
