Catherine Zeta-Jones Signs On to Disney+ Series National Treasure

Catherine Zeta-Jones, an Academy Award® and Tony Award winner, will play a major series regular role in the Disney+ original series “National Treasure,” Disney Branded Television and Disney+ announced today.

The live-action series is based on the “National Treasure” film franchise, and follows Jess (Lisette Alexis), a clever and resourceful DREAMer who sets out on a once-in-a-lifetime expedition to find the truth about her family’s strange past and recover a lost Pan-American treasure.

Billie, played by Zeta-Jones, is a tough millionaire, black-market antiques specialist, and treasure seeker who follows her own code. She went from being a poor orphan to a savvy, fashionable entrepreneur and adventurer. Billie is used to getting her way — and the Pan-American treasure is no exception. But it’s not only for the cash. For her, the stakes are higher than riches.

Catherine Zeta-Jones is an award-winning actress who has worked in both film and theatre. She won an Academy Award for her performance in the cinematic adaption of “Chicago,” in which she played the notorious Velma Kelly. Catherine was also nominated for a Golden Globe, and her performance earned her the Critics’ Choice Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress.

For her critically lauded Broadway debut as Desirée Armfeldt in Stephen Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music,” she won the Tony Award for Lead Actress in a Musical.

Her other notable appearances include Steven Soderbergh’s “Ocean’s 12,” “Side Effects,” and “Traffic,” for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her portrayal of a drug runner’s wife. She also played alongside Tom Hanks in Steven Spielberg’s “The Terminal” and George Clooney in the Coen Brothers’ dark comedy “Intolerable Cruelty.” She recently acted in the telefilm “Cocaine Godmother,” which is based on the true story of Griselda Blanco, a notorious drug kingpin.

She rose to prominence after starring alongside Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins in the action-adventure film “The Mask of Zorro.”

The series also stars Zuri Reed (“Flatbush Misdemeanors“) as Tasha, Jordan Rodrigues as Ethan (“Lady Bird“), Antonio Cipriano as Oren (“Jagged Little Pill” on Broadway”), and Jake Austin Walker (“Rectify“) as Liam – Jess’ friends whom she recruits to help uncover the truth about her parents and their connection to the treasure. Lyndon Smith (“Parenthood“) stars as FBI Agent Ross who assists in the quest.

Jerry Bruckheimer, Cormac & Marianne Wibberley, Jonathan Littman, and KristieAnne Reed executive produce the series alongside Rick Muirragui, who also serves as a writer. Jon Turteltaub is also an executive producer. Mira Nair is directing and executive producing.

A Disney Branded Television series, “National Treasure” is produced by ABC Signature, part of Disney Television Studios. Production is set to begin this month in Baton Rouge.
