CBS Mornings: Lynn Segerblom (CBS, June 20, 2024)

CBS Mornings

On Thursday, June 20, 2024, CBS Mornings welcomes Lynn Segerblom, one of the creators of the iconic rainbow flag, a symbol of LGBTQ+ pride and social movements.

Lynn Segerblom, also known by her former name Faerie Argyle Rainbow, is an artist, dye designer, and LGBTQ+ activist. She was part of the team that created the original rainbow flag, which debuted at the 1978 Gay Freedom Day Parade in San Francisco.

Segerblom, along with Gilbert Baker and James McNamara, designed and crafted two large flags, each measuring 40 by 60 feet. The original design featured eight colors, each representing a unique aspect of the LGBTQ+ community: hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic and art, indigo for serenity, and violet for spirit.

The creation of the flag was a collaborative effort, with Segerblom contributing her expertise in dyeing and designing fabrics, McNamara providing sewing skills, and Baker promoting the flag. The team faced challenges in sourcing fabric and dyes, and enlisted the help of volunteers to complete the flags in time for the parade. The original flags have since been lost, but their impact on the LGBTQ+ movement has endured.

CBS Mornings airs Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 7:00-9:00 AM on CBS.
