CBS Renews True Crime Series 48 Hours for Season 38

48 Hours Key Art

CBS is bringing back its true crime veteran, “48 Hours,” for an impressive 38th season. This news arrives even with a slight dip in ratings for the current run, a nod to the show’s lasting appeal and its importance to the network.

Currently in its 37th season, “48 Hours” pulls in an average of 2.23 million people and a 0.18 rating in the key 18-49 demographic. While these figures show a 12% dip in that demo and a 6% drop in total audience compared to season 36, the program is still a steady presence on Saturday nights. Perhaps more importantly, “48 Hours” keeps generating considerable income for CBS through syndication and repeats, which makes its renewal a smart financial move.

Since it first aired in 1988, “48 Hours” has really cemented its place as a cornerstone of true crime television. Each episode presents in-depth investigations and compelling storytelling from a team of experienced correspondents, including Erin Moriarty, Peter Van Sant, Natalie Morales, and Tracy Smith. Over the years, the program has done more than just report on crime; it has actively taken part in the search for justice. “48 Hours” has been key in reopening cold cases, focusing on overlooked stories, and has even contributed to the release of eight people who were wrongfully convicted.

It might be CBS’s lowest-rated series, but “48 Hours” brings something unique to the table: a history of solid reporting, a loyal audience, and the ability to make a genuine real-world difference. And that, it seems, is a recipe for sticking around in the unpredictable world of television.
