CBS Announces Rules for Oct. 1 Vice-Presidential Debate Between JD Vance and Tim Walz

CBS News has announced the official rules for the upcoming vice-presidential debate between Sen. JD Vance and Gov. Tim Walz, which will take place on October 1, 2024, in New York City.

The event will be broadcast live on CBS, CBS News 24/7, and Paramount+, with special coverage beginning at 4:00 PM ET. The debate itself will start at 9:00 PM ET and last for 90 minutes, moderated by Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan.

The debate format will include two breaks and no audience. Both candidates will stand behind podiums, with Vance positioned on stage right and Walz on stage left. Moderators will enforce strict timing for responses, with each candidate receiving two minutes to answer and rebuttal opportunities. A virtual coin toss held on September 26 determined that JD Vance will give the second closing statement.

The rules emphasize transparency and fairness, including a ban on props or pre-written notes. Microphones may be turned off if candidates exceed their allotted time. The event space will be available for staff and candidate walkthroughs before the debate.
