The US adaptation of “The Summit” has been axed by CBS after just one season, leaving the future of the global format hanging in the balance. This news comes as a blow to fans of the reality competition series, which was hosted by Manu Bennett and filmed in New Zealand.
The network’s decision to cancel “The Summit (US)” follows disappointing viewership numbers. Averaging only 2.6 million viewers, the show failed to capitalize on its “Survivor” lead-in, raising concerns about its overall appeal to American audiences.
Originally an Australian format developed by Nine and Endemol Shine, “The Summit” has seen international adaptations in several territories, including the UK, The Netherlands, Finland, and Sweden. The Australian version, hosted by Jai Courtney, has aired two seasons on Nine. However, a third season has yet to be greenlit, and the US cancellation now casts a shadow over its prospects.
While the US version may have stumbled, Banijay, the distributor, still views “The Summit” as a promising format. They consider the show a “next generation superbrand,” maintaining hope for its continued success in other markets. The question remains whether the original Australian version will climb to new heights or face a similar fate. Nine has not yet indicated whether “The Summit” will return for a third season. The US cancellation adds further uncertainty to the show’s future Down Under.
