Changing Planet: River Restoration (PBS, Wednesday, April 23, 2025)

Changing Planet PBS

Returning for its fourth season, PBS’s “Changing Planet” continues its seven-year mission to document the effects of climate change on vulnerable ecosystems. In “River Restoration,” airing this Wednesday, Dr. M. Sanjayan travels to Northern California to witness a monumental undertaking: the largest river restoration project ever attempted on the Klamath River.

The ambitious project involves removing four massive dams, a move intended to revive struggling salmon populations and restore balance to the river’s ecosystem. But such large-scale interventions come with their own set of challenges. Sanjayan explores this massive undertaking, speaking with scientists, engineers, and local communities about the potential benefits and unforeseen consequences of such a drastic intervention.

From the rugged landscapes of Northern California, “Changing Planet” then shifts its focus to the heart of Paris, where another kind of river restoration is taking place. The Seine River, long polluted and neglected, is undergoing a major cleanup effort, aiming to improve water quality and restore biodiversity.
