One day after news broke that Bryan Kohberger will plead guilty to the 2022 Idaho student murders, Good Morning America aired an emotional interview with the family of Ethan Chapin, one of the four victims.
Parents Jim and Stacy Chapin, along with siblings Hunter and Maizie, appeared on Tuesday’s broadcast to speak publicly for the first time. Ethan, one of three triplets, was 20 years old when he was killed in an off-campus house in Moscow, Idaho.
The Chapins shared how they learned of Ethan’s death, with Hunter, who was part of the same fraternity, delivering the news to their parents. They described Ethan as full of energy and joy. All four family members now carry tattoos in his memory, including one using Ethan’s handwriting.
The interview comes ahead of the Prime Video docuseries One Night in Idaho: The College Murders, which premieres Thursday, July 11. The series revisits the case that drew national attention, but the Chapins used their GMA appearance to refocus on who Ethan was, rather than how he died.
On Monday, it was confirmed that Kohberger had agreed to a plea deal, avoiding trial and removing the possibility of the death penalty. The exact terms have not been disclosed, but the decision ends more than a year of legal uncertainty.
The family also revealed they brought Ethan’s ashes to Priest Lake in northern Idaho, a place he loved. The visit served as a private tribute ahead of the public retelling of his story through the upcoming series.
