Cher on Sonny: “It Wasn’t Love at First Sight” This Week on CBS Sunday Morning

The Cher and Sonny story is one we think we know. A whirlwind romance, musical magic, and eventual heartbreak – it’s practically pop culture scripture. But a new interview with Cher on CBS Sunday Morning suggests there’s more to the tale than the standard narrative. Turns out, the first chapter wasn’t exactly a fairy tale.

Cher recalls her initial encounter with Sonny Bono with the sort of sharp detail only time (or maybe a really good therapist) can provide. Picture this: a young Cher, just 16, meets a 27-year-old Sonny sporting a mohair suit, mustard shirt, and, wait for it, Cuban-heeled boots. Now that’s an image.

And the spark? Well, it wasn’t exactly fireworks. “It wasn’t love at first sight,” Cher admits, adding, “It was something.” That “something,” as the interview hints, involved Sonny’s initial preference for Cher’s friend. Yes, you read that right. He wasn’t even initially into Cher.

The story gets even more unconventional. Cher, needing a place to stay, moved in with Sonny. Not exactly the stuff of romantic comedies, is it? But as Cher explains, their connection was born out of a certain authenticity. Sonny, typically drawn to older women, found in Cher a refreshing honesty. “He got to be with me. Like he was real with me.” This, perhaps, is the foundation upon which their unique bond, and later their musical empire, was built.
