Chicago Fire’s “Untouchable,” offered a solid mix of fiery explosions, both literal and figurative. Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Chief Pascal’s (Dermot Mulroney) pursuit of the crooked Captain Bishop (Keith Kupferer) heated up, not with flashy shootouts, but with the simmering tension of veiled threats and potential danger to their families. It’s the kind of slow-burn suspense that keeps you checking the locks on your doors.
Carver’s (Jake Lockett) romantic woes continued their rollercoaster ride. This week, his relationship with Tori (Holly Hinchliffe) hit some serious turbulence. Luckily, Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) was there to offer a sympathetic ear and a shoulder to cry on, though probably not the romantic interest Carver might secretly (or not-so-secretly) be hoping for. The question of whether Carver and Tori can work through their long-distance issues remains, for now, unanswered.
Mouch’s ambition to become a lieutenant took center stage, culminating in a panic attack. While the scene was effective in highlighting Mouch’s vulnerability, the storyline itself feels a little predictable, like reheated leftovers from past seasons.
Violet (Hanako Greensmith), meanwhile, took a leap of faith with Finn, opening up about past trauma. The two seem to be finding some common ground, despite the different worlds they inhabit. Whether this is the start of a beautiful friendship or something more remains to be seen.
Amidst the personal dramas, the episode still managed to squeeze in some procedural elements. The storage facility fire from earlier in the season reared its ugly head again, implicating Bishop in illegal gun manufacturing. The reappearance of Devin (Al Vicente), the elusive witness from that fire, added complications, though his quick escape left Severide and Pascal with more questions than answers.
Novak’s (Jocelyn Hudon) efforts to implement a whole blood program for the ambulances offered a welcome change of pace from the relationship angst. It’s a practical storyline that highlights the everyday challenges faced by first responders, even without arsonists and corrupt captains lurking around every corner.
The episode’s climax saw Bishop’s car and garage engulfed in flames, which, surprisingly, weren’t set by Devin. So, who’s the mystery arsonist? It might just be the only real cliffhanger “Untouchable” left us with, alongside the pile of illegal weapons that led to Bishop’s well-deserved arrest. Let’s hope next week’s episode brings a bit more heat.
Tune in next Wednesday at 9/8c on NBC for the next episode of Chicago Fire.
