This week’s Chicago PD plunged into the murky depths of police corruption, forcing Sergeant Hank Voight to confront a powerful enemy within his own ranks. “Greater Good” kicked off with a bloody turf war on Chicago’s West Side, culminating in the senseless death of a bus driver and prompting Intelligence to step in. But as the team investigated the murder of Carl Samson, a man who’d unwisely taunted the Macklin Hustlers gang online, they soon realized they were dealing with something far more complicated than a simple gang shooting.
Officer Cook went undercover, infiltrating the Macklin Hustlers to get a closer look. Her operation, however, hit a snag when a disgruntled former client threatened to blow her cover. Meanwhile, Voight began to suspect that Deputy Chief Reid was pulling strings from behind the scenes, manipulating events to install a new drug kingpin, and quite possibly having orchestrated the death of Carl’s sister.
The arrest of Kaiden, a Macklin Hustlers member, offered a potential break in the case. Initially resistant, Kaiden eventually agreed to cooperate, flipping on his boss, Hamani, thanks to some persuasive legal counsel. That counsel, however, turned out to be working for a rival gang — a setup orchestrated by Reid to wipe out the Macklin Hustlers entirely.
The episode’s tension ratcheted up as Voight confronted Reid, questioning how many people the Deputy Chief “owned” — a clear accusation of systemic corruption and manipulation. The confrontation between Voight and Reid wasn’t just about one case; it felt like a battle for the soul of the Chicago PD.
Amidst the escalating gang violence, the return of ASA Nina Chapman introduced a new complication. Her reappearance and attempt to reconnect with Voight hinted at a potential rekindling of their past relationship, but Voight seemed more focused on the looming threat posed by Reid. “Greater Good” ended with Voight more determined than ever to expose Reid’s corruption, setting the stage for an explosive conflict that will likely dominate the rest of the season.
Chicago PD airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
