Chicago PD Season 12 Episode 9 Recap “Friends and Family”

Chicago P.D. Key Art

Chicago PD is back, and it brought the tension with it. This week’s case hits close to home for Officer Cook, both literally and figuratively, as a wealthy family’s world is shattered by a kidnapping.

When Cook stumbles upon a car accident, she discovers the driver was on his way to pay a ransom for his kidnapped family. The driver, Gregory Miller, is a lawyer who, shockingly, isn’t as rich as he seems. Bad investments and gambling debts paint a picture of desperation, muddying the waters of the kidnapping’s motive. Things take a dark turn when the kidnappers murder Gregory’s wife on camera, raising the stakes and the ransom demand.

With the police struggling to secure the full amount, Cook makes a risky decision. She taps into her family’s considerable wealth to help save Gregory’s daughters, Courtney and Maya. This choice reveals the fractured relationship between Cook and her affluent mother, adding a personal dimension to the already high-stakes case.

The investigation is full of twists and turns, dead ends and close calls. The kidnappers play games, leading the cops into a trap. Information from the victim’s secret lover eventually leads to the children’s rescue, but not before Cook is forced to confront the uncomfortable truth about her own family’s privilege and the lengths she’ll go to uphold a promise. The episode ends with Cook attending a family fundraiser, seemingly ready to reject the charade of a perfect family she’s been living with.

Chicago PD airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
