Chicago PD Season 12 Premiere Recap: Voight Faces His Past as New Team Member Steps In

Chicago P.D.

NBC’s Chicago PD returned on September 25, 2024, with its Season 12 premiere titled “Ten Ninety-Nine.” The episode revisited the emotional aftermath of Voight’s close encounter with death, as the Intelligence Unit struggled to manage a surge in cases.

Voight’s wounds, both physical and emotional, weighed heavily on him, as his reliance on work increased following the departure of Detective Upton. Meanwhile, newcomer Detective Emily Martel joined the team, stepping into the void left by Upton and quickly proving her organizational skills in a fast-paced environment.

As the unit became immersed in a dangerous drug case, tensions escalated. Voight’s unrelenting approach saw him push boundaries by taking control of a case that should have fallen under Narcotics’ jurisdiction.

His new Criminal Informant provided key intel, linking the drug activity to a figure named EJ. Voight’s determination to solve the case led to risky decisions, such as entering a suspect’s residence without a warrant and placing his CI in a precarious situation.

This strategy paid off, as the team uncovered vital evidence of EJ’s personal vendetta against the drug dealers responsible for his sister’s death.

The episode reached a tragic conclusion when Martel was killed during an unexpected shootout, shaking the team to its core. Voight was forced to confront his own emotional turmoil as Deputy Chief Reed acknowledged the unit’s success in ending a deadly drug operation, while ASA Nina Chapman urged Voight to address his trauma. With Martel’s death, the Intelligence Unit faces new challenges as they continue their battle against crime.
