Christopher Eccleston, most recently seen in “True Detective: Night Country,” will be the face of a new Sky History documentary series called “The Guilty Innocent.” The show delves into two high-profile cases of wrongful conviction, presenting an in-depth investigation into each one.
Using a combination of archive footage, interviews with historical experts, and reconstruction, “The Guilty Innocent” aims to shed light on why and how the justice system erred in these instances. By examining these miscarriages of justice, the series prompts viewers to reflect on what these cases reveal about our society today.
In the first episode, Eccleston introduces viewers to the story of George Davis, a minicab driver who was wrongfully convicted for an armed payroll robbery. Throughout the episode, he interviews those who campaigned tirelessly for Davis’ release and for his conviction to be overturned. Additionally, viewers are treated to an exclusive long-form TV interview with Davis himself as he breaks his fifty-year silence.
The series also delves into the controversial case of James Hanratty. Hanratty was one of the last individuals to be hanged in Britain after being found guilty of murder and attempted murder. Eccleston retraces the convoluted twists-and-turns of this notorious case while revisiting the evidence that led to Hanratty’s execution. Hanratty’s death also sparked a national movement against capital punishment in the UK.
Regarding his involvement in “The Guilty Innocent,” Christopher Eccleston shared, “The pursuit of justice is a subject matter which has peppered my career with dramas that remain special… The Guilty Innocent is another project which pursues justice through a new medium.”
“The Guilty Innocent” is created by Nathanael Wiseman and produced by Victoria Williams from Redeeming Features. Brian Hill from Century Films and Deep Sehgal from GroupM Motion Entertainment serve as executive producers.
Premiering on Sky History, “The Guilty Innocent with Christopher Eccleston” begins with two hour-long episodes scheduled to air in May 2024.
