“Common Side Effects” has never been a show for the faint of heart, but Sunday’s episode, “Dumpsite,” cranks the unsettling factor up to eleven. Our amateur mycologists, Marshall and Frances, are back, and their foray into fungal entrepreneurship takes a decidedly toxic turn.
Marshall, ever the shrewd businessman (in his own mind, at least), decides to expand his mushroom-growing operation by purchasing a suspiciously cheap plot of land. The catch? It’s conveniently located next to a cheerfully bubbling chemical waste site. Because what could possibly go wrong? Meanwhile, Frances makes a sudden return from her European sojourn, cutting her trip short due to a mysterious yet urgent development. One suspects a postcard from Grandma wasn’t the catalyst for this hasty homecoming.
As Marshall cultivates his potentially poisonous produce, Copano and Harrington, our doggedly determined detectives, start to piece together the connection between him and Frances. Their investigation, once a meandering stroll through a hazy landscape of suspicion, finally seems to be gaining some much-needed momentum.
Will Marshall’s mushrooms glow in the dark? Will Frances’s unexpected arrival shed light on the shady dealings of big pharma and the government? “Dumpsite” promises a bumper crop of paranoia and dark humor, the kind that makes you laugh while nervously eyeing the nearest exit.
