Adult Swim’s Common Side Effects continues its blend of paranoia and absurdist humor this Sunday with “Hildy,” the third episode of its freshman season. The series, which follows estranged lab partners Marshall and Frances as they stumble upon a potentially world-altering conspiracy involving psychedelic mushrooms, big pharma, and shadowy government agencies, shows no signs of slowing down its descent into the weird.
This week, Marshall seeks counsel from his former mentor, the enigmatically named Hildy. Whether Hildy offers actual guidance or just adds another dose of eccentricity to the mix is anyone’s guess. Meanwhile, the curious fungi seized in the previous episode’s raid continue to cause trouble, pulling Officers Copano and Harrington deeper into the mushroom-fueled madness.
Frances, ostensibly enjoying a romantic getaway in Geneva with her boyfriend Nick (and, for some reason, Rick), can’t seem to shake her fascination with the mysterious mushrooms. One suspects a transatlantic phone call to Marshall might be in the cards, probably involving frantic whispers and cryptic clues.
