Connie Britton, known for her dramatic roles in Friday Night Lights and The White Lotus, is circling back to her comedic roots. Hulu has ordered a pilot for Phony, a half-hour comedy starring and executive produced by Britton. The project hails from writer/director Nick Paley (Marcel the Shell With Shoes On) and is produced by Drew Goddard’s Goddard Textiles and 20th Television.
Phony centers on Sonny, a teenager who, after a car accident, discovers his mom, Ellen (Britton), might have been replaced by an imposter. This high-concept premise blends mystery with a coming-of-age narrative.
This project marks a return to comedy for Britton, who began her career with a recurring role on the sitcom Ellen and later starred opposite Michael J. Fox in Spin City. Given her comedic chops and the interesting premise, Phony feels like a smart bet for Hulu, which has seen success with quirky comedies like Only Murders in the Building.
The streamer has been actively expanding its comedy slate, with recent pilot orders for Mid-Century Modern, starring Nathan Lane, and Downforce, starring Eve Hewson. Mid-Century Modern has already received a series order, suggesting Hulu’s commitment to building a stronger comedic lineup.
The pilot’s creative team includes Paley as writer, director, and executive producer, along with Britton, Charlie Alderman, Drew Goddard, and Sarah Esberg. Goddard’s involvement is particularly noteworthy, considering his track record with genre-bending shows like The Good Place and Daredevil.
His production company, Goddard Textiles, recently signed a first-look deal with 20th Television after a previous pact with ABC Signature. This move, coupled with ABC Signature’s recent absorption into 20th Television, further solidifies Disney’s influence over television production.
Phony is produced by Goddard Textiles and 20th Television for Hulu. Executive Producers include Connie Britton, Nick Paley, Charlie Alderman, Drew Goddard, and Sarah Esberg. Andrea Massaro serves as a producer.
