“Convicting My Ex,” a new documentary airing this Tuesday on BBC Three, follows the extraordinary journey of Ellie Wilson, a survivor of rape who successfully fought for justice against her ex-boyfriend, Daniel McFarlane. But Ellie’s fight isn’t over. Now a campaigner dedicated to changing the criminal justice system for survivors of sexual assault, Ellie faces a new hurdle when she discovers that McFarlane has applied for parole halfway through his five-year sentence.
The documentary recounts Ellie’s initial ordeal, revealing how she secretly recorded Daniel’s confession on her phone, a piece of evidence that proved crucial in securing his conviction. The episode features Ellie re-living this traumatic experience, and bravely addresses the cross-examination by Daniel’s defence lawyer and subsequent online abuse she’s faced.
