Corfu: Jewel of the Med (Channel 5, Friday, 16 May, 2025)

Channel 5 Numeric

Channel 5 transports viewers to the sun-drenched Greek island of Corfu this Friday, with the dulcet tones of Joanna Lumley as our guide. Forget dreary British weather; this is a virtual escape to turquoise waters, ancient olive groves, and a culture steeped in tradition.

While Corfu’s natural beauty takes center stage, the program also spotlights the island’s rich history and enduring connection to olive oil production. We meet Spyros Dafnis, a sixth-generation olive oil producer who carries on his family’s legacy with a modern twist: an Olive Oil bar. Talk about a tasting experience.

The episode also visits the “white house” in Kalami Bay, once home to the Durrell family and the setting for Gerald Durrell’s beloved wildlife memoirs. We hear from Lee Durrell, Gerald’s wife, who continues his conservation work as an ambassador for the Ionian Environment Foundation. And no trip to Corfu would be complete without a visit to the Achilleion Palace, built for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, where Zaira Papadatou and her team work tirelessly to restore its former glory.
