Sun-drenched beaches, ancient ruins, and the soothing sounds of the lyra — if that’s your idea of a good time, then Channel 5’s new series Jewels of the Mediterranean might just be your cup of ouzo. The series kicks off with a trip to Crete, the largest of the Greek Islands, and attempts to capture the island’s multifaceted appeal, from its historical significance to its modern-day efforts in sea turtle conservation.
In Rethymno, a coastal city on Crete’s northern shore, viewers will witness the struggle to protect loggerhead sea turtles as they hatch and make their perilous journey to the sea. Further inland, the episode explores the Palace of Knossos, offering a glimpse into the Minoan civilization that once flourished on the island. Switching gears from history to gastronomy, the program introduces two brothers in Heraklion, Crete’s capital, who are striving to revive ancient Minoan culinary traditions using locally sourced ingredients.
The episode also ventures to the Lasithi Plateau, home to what is considered the world’s oldest wind farm. Once boasting 10,000 windmills, the plateau’s sustainable irrigation practices have even been adopted by the United Nations. Viewers will meet brother and sister Georgios and Maria Hatzakis, who are dedicated to restoring these iconic structures. And let’s not forget the music! The distinct sound of the lyra, a three-stringed instrument crafted from walnut and cedar, will serenade viewers as the episode explores the vibrant musical traditions that are integral to Cretan festivals. Narrated by Joanna Lumley, this premiere episode aims to capture the essence of Crete.
Jewels of the Mediterranean airs Friday, January 3, 2025, at 8:00 PM on Channel 5.
